Will a Transmission Flush Clean The Filter?

5/28/2013

  • No. This subject creates much controversy. It is definitely an area that can expose you to some liability and possibly result in you paying for a transmission repair or replacement.
  • Most vehicles today (75%) that are serviced contain a felt media filter as opposed to a nylon or metal screen type filter. This filter design does a more efficient job removing small contaminates that can result in a transmission failure. The felt media traps the foreign materials and embeds the debris within its fibers.
  • Would you consider changing the engine oil and washing out the old oil filter in your parts washer and reinstalling that same filter? Your success in cleaning that engine oil filter is about as good as cleaning that transmission filter.
  • Flushing a filter of its collected debris sounds like the ultimate solution. So, how do you flush a felt media filter?
  • Actually, you can't! One of the sales stories that many flush machine sales people promote is the filter is back flushed and completely cleaned during the flush and fluid exchange process.
  • This is not true - the felt media traps and contains the fine particles that result from normal transmission wear within its tiny pores. It is impossible to back flush and wash out the debris.

I think checking the VIN number can help you find original parts for the car.

Tow trucks can be dispatched to your site with a call to the towing service. However, if you don't know your area, it could be a little harder for the tow truck service to find you. Breakdowns and collisions may be the more common incidents that towing is required but if you are stranded somewhere, its best if you know your general location.

Thank you for these helpful tips on how to flush your transmission. We have a foreign car that needs some transmission work done. I will be sure to advise them that I want the filter changed in addition to a transmission flush.

I agree that transmission flush doesn't clean the filter. However, it is very an effective way to remove the deposited contaminants from the transmission which ensure the smoother performance of the transmission. Deposition of debris in the transmission fluid could jeopardize the performance of the transmission. So, the condition of the transmission fluid should be inspected at a regular interval and if necessary should be flushed to ensure the smoother performance of the transmission.

The filter used in the transmission plays a key role by protecting different components of the transmission from different kind of foreign-bodies. However, damaged or clogged filter couldn't do so. So, the condition of different kind of filters used in the vehicle including the transmission filter should be inspected at a regular interval and if necessary should be replaced with suitable substitutes.

I was looking for an article which could help me to understand the importance of different types of filters in the vehicle and the maintenance it needs on a daily basis. The filters used in the vehicle to protect different components of the vehicle from the foreign microscopic contaminants need to be inspected regularly and older or clogged filters should be replaced to get better filtration.

Deposition of slug and dust particles could influence the performance of the transmission in a very adverse way. Transmission is an expensive component and plays an important role in the performance of the vehicle and thus needs special attention to work efficiently. Deposition of slug in the transmission or use of burnt lubricants could have a negative influence on the performance of the vehicle. So, the condition of different types of lubricants should be inspected and burnt lubricants should be replaced in time. Transmission fluid should be flushed to remove the deposited slug from it and to keep it in working order. For more assistance, visit
