Differential gear repairs and modifications are everyday tasks here at Cloquet Automotive. Even though your differential may look very complicated and complex they really are quite simple when broken down and that is what the video below does a nice job of. The real trouble with differential repairs isn't the actual repair as much as it is trying to effectively explain to our customers how a differential works and why repairs or adjustments need to be made. To help us out with this task check out this great visual and verbal explanation of how your differential works. Who doesn't love a good black and white presentation, and we promise you will have a better understanding for a differential and how it works after watching. Enjoy!

A very clear, concise, and accurate explanation of how your manual transmission works. Very good information for those looking for the correct know how.
Problem and Result: A restriction in the flow of the transmission fluid can result in major heat build-up and internal transmission damage/failure.
What Happens and Why: The restriction affects the hydraulic flow in the lubrication circuit and can also cause an erratic or improper fluid pressure resulting in slippage, leading to accelerated wear on clutches, bands or other internal components. EXAMPLE: Think of this as if you were to have a garden. The plants/flowers in that garden need water in order to stay alive and function properly (grow). The internal parts of your transmission act as the flowers whereas your transmission acts as the garden. If the hose you are using to water flowers in your garden were to kink, those flowers will not receive enough water to keep growing, and they will die. Well, the internal parts for your transmission need a sufficient amount of transmission fluid much like flowers need a sufficient amount of water in order to keep working properly. When the fluid is restricted, much like a kink in a hose, the parts will not receive enough fluid to stay lubricated, thus, causing friction and heat. This heat and added friction results in the internal failure of your transmission. How to Prevent: Keeping the transmission system clean is very important. Removing an contamination that can interfere with the operation of transmission components, such as valve bodies and solenoids, will promote a longer transmission life. So now ask yourself... "Is it time for a transmission filter change?" If you can't remember your last transmission filter change it probably means you're due.
